Jerk Turkey Burgers

The 4th of July is quickly approaching (this is a bad word in the education world since our summer is dwindling away), here is a healthier, yummy alternative to the burger you may want to try for your 4th of July BBQ.

I found this recipe on Livestrong.com last year.  We have enjoyed making it several times.  This time we even tried making them on the grill.

There are quite a few spices in this recipe so check your spice rack before making this.

Jerk Turkey Burgers

1/3 cup Panko Bread Crumbs

2 tsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil

1/2 cup Red Bell Pepper, raw

2 cloves Garlic, raw

1 tsp Thyme

1 tsp Curry Powder

1/2 tsp. Cumin

1/2 tsp Ground Ginger

1/4 tsp Paprika, sweet

1/8 tsp Cayenne Pepper

1 lb. Ground Turkey

1 Large Egg

In a small nonstick skillet, heat oil over low heat.  Add finely diced red pepper, minced garlic and spices.  Saute for 1-2 minutes until slightly softened.  Take off the heat and let it cool.

In a large bowl combine ground turkey, egg, Panko bread crumbs, cooled red pepper and spices mixing thoroughly but lightly.

Shape into 4 burgers and saute in lightly oiled nonstick skillet about 5 minutes on each side until browned – check doneness with meat thermometer (160 degrees).   If you are grilling we found that it worked best to start by grilling the patties on a piece of foil on one side.  Before flipping to cook the other side you can remove it from the foil and place it right on the grill.  Since the meat is more loose than hamburger, you need the foil to start with so it doesn’t fall through the grates on the grill.  You can also add salt and pepper if desired.
