This week we read the book “The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse” by Eric Carle.  We love all the Eric Carle books!  This one was just perfect for my four-year-old because it was written with a pattern that he could easily memorize and “read” the book himself.  Each page has one animal and the text describes the color of the animal that the artist has made.  The artist in the book really uses an imagination with each animal (ie polka dot donkey).  The best part was seeing the excitement in Will’s eyes and his pride in himself when he could read the whole book to me!

For our project we decided to get creative with some animal pictures of our own.  We started by mixing up a couple batches of Kool-Aid finger paint.  Then we printed some animal coloring pages from the Internet.

I found the recipe for Kool-Aid finger paint here.

Kool-Aid Finger Paint

•2 cups flour

• 2 packages unsweetened Kool-Aid (use different flavors for different colors)

• 1/2 cup salt

•3 cups boiling water

• 3 tablespoons oil

What you do:

1. Put the Kool-Aid, flour and salt into a mixing bowl.

2. Add the oil.

3. Slowly add the boiling water.

4. Start painting!

Here are the ingredients!

Adding and mixing the dry ingredients!

Add the oil and boiling water and mix.

At this point Will was no longer interested — he said it looked like “throw up” because some times when you throw up it is pink.  Well, I can’t say he was too off the mark.  As you add all the water and keep mixing it does get a lot thinner.  😉

So, these are the two pictures I finger painted since Will did not want to touch the paint or get messy.

The recipe makes A LOT of finger paint (even making just half).  I would suggest halving the recipe for sure if not making less than that.    I’m curious how long the paint keeps in a sealed container.

stART ~ The Very Lonely Firefly September 4, 2011

This summer there were a ton of fireflies around here.  They are fun to watch light up the night.  We read the book, “The Very Lonely Firefly” by Eric this week.  This book follows a firefly as he searches for some firefly friends.  On his journey he meets several sources of light until he finally finds his friends.  I was disappointed that the copy of the book from the library was broken so the fireflies didn’t light up in the back.

We made a firefly picture for our art project.  First we used white and yellow crayons on black paper to make a night-time scene (moon and stars).  Next we used colored band-aids to make the fireflies.  For the glow we dabbed some yellow puffy paint on the end of his tail.  Last, we added wiggly eyes.

stART ~ A House for Hermit Crab August 14, 2011

Will is really interested in Eric Carle books lately.  This week our stART book was “A House for Hermit Crab” by Eric Carle.  We didn’t focus on the months of the year, which is one of the lessons in the book.  We focused on how the crab made his shell pretty and made friend along the way.  It also had an element of sharing when the hermit crab grew too big for his special shell and ended up giving his home and friends to another hermit crab looking for a bigger shell.

For the project we used the idea from “A Mommy’s Adventure” and decorated Will’s own shell.  Go here to get the templates for the crab and shell.  I also made a background sheet using scrapbook paper (water and sand) to glue the finished product on.  First, Will colored the crab and shell with crayons (you can see he wasn’t too into coloring this time).  Next, I gathered different items he could glue on the shell such as pom poms, foam stickers, googly eyes and feathers.  Will really loved using a glue bottle.  Like all kids, he does need some more practice using a glue bottle!

stART ~ The Very Hungry Caterpillar July 25, 2011

I just love how doing stART every week gets Will interested in new books.  A couple of weeks ago we read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle and now it is a daily (two times a day) read at our house.  He even has the story memorized which is fun to let him “read” the book to me!  It is also a great book to start acquainting kids with the days of the week, types of fruit and counting objects to 5.

For our project we made a caterpillar out of an egg carton.  Will loved the painting part.  He made sure we got the face just right, too.  A few days later he decided the face was all wrong, but he was still proud of his work.

Painting the face with red craft paint.

Painting the body green.

Add googly eyes and a pipe cleaner for antennaes. Draw on the nose and mouth.
